Pageant Judging

Judges are selected for their expertise in all the fields of competition. They should all have an awareness of correct western dress, are an experienced western type horseman or woman who is accustomed to judging horse events and work with the public in everyday situations.

The contestants will be judged in various areas with the 3 main categories being- Horsemanship, Personality & Appearance. Areas of competition will include-speech, written test, modeling, photogenic, extemporaneous question, and personal interview. Horsemanship will be judged while the contestants are riding their patterns and on their knowledge of horsemanship during their interview. Personality and appearance will be judged throughout the entire pageant.

Appearance and Personality – The purpose of this is to select the girl who rates highest in: attractiveness and grooming, to include neatness and cleanliness in every detail; poise and posture, lady-like behavior in every situation; photogenic quality; knowledge of proper western attire with particular attention given to color coordination. This is not a clothes contest, however, the contestants are expected to wear full western dress (meaning pants, jeans, dress, skirt, western shirt or blouse, jacket, vest, hat, belt and boots). It is not necessary to invest an extensive amount in clothing until and unless you are selected as Miss NFPB. Judges will be looking for versatility, imagination, creativity, and current styles displayed by the contestants. Personality also plays a big part in the Miss NFPB pageant. You will be judged on maturity, high moral standards, sincerity and integrity. Rodeo Queens must make public appearances, sign autographs and generally be able to meet the public well with a sense of humor and be at ease. Good common sense is essential.

Horsemanship – The purpose of this division is to select a girl who rates highest in horsemanship, to include control of the mount and the way any situation may occur is handled. The judges will be looking for balance, position of hands, feet and seat and proper exacution of patterns. Contestants will be asked to demonstrate the set pattern and carry a flag and make a presentation hot lap. Dress for this event shall be a plain white shirt and dark blue jeans. No colored jeans. Failure to meet these rules will result in a zero for this event. Showmanship should be considered since a contestant’s personality does project from horseback to the audience and judges. After completion of pattern contestant will dismount for judges and answer questions. A horse(and full equipment)will be provided for this event. Contestants will be required to ride in the equipment provided for them along with the horse they have drawn to compete on. As Miss NFPB you will ride many horses throughout the year. Being a great horsewoman is an essential part of this judged category and being Miss NFPB.

And will also be required to model a formal wear outfit(Western Dress, Skirt/Shirt, Jacket or Vest) Which will be followed by Speech. The judges will be looking for originality, style, neatness and color coordination.

Speech – Each Contestant will give their speech following the formal wear modeling competition. It is to be at least 3 minutes in length and on the sport of bullriding. The judges will be looking for knowledge of the subject as well as entertainment.

Written Test – There will be a written test given to test your knowledge of the sport of bullriding and the NFPB.

These questions are at the judges descretion and is a time for the judges to get to know you. Questions can be about anything(NFPB, bullriding, rodeo, current events, personality, horsemanship etc)

Miss Congeniality – This will be voted on by all pageant contestants and is not worth any points but prize will be given to winner.
